On rare occasions I write prayers down. They are not like my usual daily ramblings to God. These spoken words or thoughts have little structure. They often are repetitive. Seldom do I feel I adequately express myself. What I am sure of though is that God doesn’t mind.
For my own sake, it can sometimes be a help to write down what I want to say. It articulates what is important. Also helps order scattered thoughts. Such prayers are borne at a particular place and time of life. Yet, looking back, they have an enduring validity.
The following prayer I penned over 26 years ago at a conference in the beautiful country of Switzerland. It seems as pertinent today as back then. It may be that you find some solace in the sentiments expressed.
Lord I am on a journey, a journey of service. At certain stages of the journey I find the road broad and the traffic heavy. Help me to keep on the way, to maintain a steady, calm, confident and sure hand. Even when I cannot see the way may I keep the course. Your grace and love have kept me through many experiences of life’s journey. I have known your hand upon my life for many years.
When emotions or perplexity attack me I ask, dear Father, once again for your grace to be faithful. To remain in the place where you want me for the time you wish. Lord, fill me afresh with a sense of renewal and joy and always to know the quiet assurance that I am loved ALL the time.
I pray also for the manifestation, maturing and continual development of the gifts that I have – to always be exercising the self knowledge you have given me, to know my place and to affirm it. To increasingly walk in the joy of the Holy Spirit and to be always praising your name.
Lord, when pressure, perceived or real, comes upon me or the future looks difficult, help me to relax and cast all my care upon you, knowing your care for me. To not be afraid of either the present or the future. To embrace each day as it comes. To enjoy it to the full, drinking in all you have for me.
Precious Father, thank you for your love to me personally and for those you have given me to share life with.

That’s a very sincere and deep prayer and it resonates with me. It expresses the heart and will always be relevant however far along the road of spiritual maturity we’re at.I have no doubt the Lord was and is pleased to hear heartfelt thoughtful prayers like this one even though He already ‘heard’ it before it came tumbling out of our mouths. Bless you Allan.
